WHAT IS A JT SKID?
A Joule-Thomson (J-T) skid is a piece of equipment used in natural gas processing to simultaneously reduce the water dew point of gas, recover valuable hydrocarbon liquids, and lower the BTU (British Thermal Unit) of the gas stream to sales pipeline or contract specifications. This gas could also be conditioned and used as fuel gas for certain high-speed engines. These systems can recover natural gas liquids (NGLs) which are very valuable heavy hydrocarbons that can be sold separately from the gas stream.
JT Skid & NGL Recovery
- Introduction of Natural Gas: The J-T skid takes in a high-pressure natural gas stream, typically from a wellhead or a pipeline.
- Throttling Valve: Inside the skid, the natural gas passes through a throttling valve. This valve rapidly reduces the pressure of the gas. According to the Joule-Thomson effect, when a gas expands into a lower-pressure environment, it cools down.
- Temperature Drop: As the high-pressure gas passes through the throttling valve, it undergoes a significant temperature drop due to the expansion. This temperature drop causes some of the components of the natural gas mixture to condense into liquids. These components are primarily heavier hydrocarbons such as propane, butane, and pentane, which are present in the natural gas stream along with methane.
- Separation: The cooled gas mixture, now containing condensed NGLs, moves into a separation vessel or separator. In this vessel, the liquid NGLs separate from the remaining natural gas.
- Recovery and Storage: The separated NGLs are collected and typically sent for further processing or storage. This recovered liquid can be valuable as it contains valuable hydrocarbons that can be used for various industrial applications or as feedstock for petrochemical processes.
- Outlet of Treated Gas: The natural gas, now stripped of a portion of its NGL content, exits the J-T skid. Depending on the application, it may undergo further treatment or be transported for distribution.
Overall, the J-T skid effectively utilizes the Joule-Thomson effect to cool and condense NGLs from a natural gas stream, enabling the recovery of valuable liquids from the gas mixture. This process is widely used in the natural gas industry for NGL recovery, as it provides an efficient and cost-effective method to separate these valuable components from the raw gas stream.
